The Great Debunk: Addressing the Illusion

The following identify some common illusions pervading Canadian consciousness regarding Indigenous Peoples.

Illusion 1: “It’s not my problem if my ancestors did it.” (Short form of this myth is also often expressed as “Not my problem.”)

This mentality is still alive and well today, and it is important to recognize its role in maintaining the status quo instead of focusing on economic reconciliation and the designed growth of the Indigenous economy. The underlying tone of this is to set the stage for taking no responsibility for the current state of Indigenous poverty.
